Mel Assagai
Considered one of Sacramento's most effective legislative advocates, Mel Assagai, leads the firm's government affairs and communications practice. He leverages his unique ability to create and manage strategies that address constantly changing public policies and opinions to aid clients in business, industry and government. Mr. Assagai is recognized for his talent in legislative research and planning, bill tracking, public relations, coalition building and Political Action Committee (PAC) management.
Mr. Assagai has successfully represented a wide range of public and private organizations, businesses and individuals before the California State Legislature and government agencies throughout his career. He built his considerable expertise in government and politics while working as chief lobbyist and senior executive for governmental affairs for the State Bar of California and as chief of staff and press secretary to California Senate President pro Tempore David Roberti. Prior to that, Mr. Assagai covered politics, the courts, government and education for 10 years as a journalist and editor at The Sacramento Bee. His reporting excellence earned him the "John Swett Education Writer's Award" in 1976.
In recognition of his unwavering commitment to civic and professional organizations, Mr. Assagai has received numerous awards. Sacramento Magazine selected Mr. Assagai as one of its "Best and Brightest" and both the California Assembly and the California State Senate recognized his achievements. He received a Community Service Award from the Greater Sacramento Urban League; the Legislative Award from Black Advocates in State Service; the Distinguished Public Service Award from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and the National Urban League's M. Whitney Young Public Service Award.
Mr. Assagai has taught journalism and government at California State University, Sacramento, and the University of California, Davis, respectively. He earned his bachelor's degree in management from California Coast University.
In 1990 he was given an honorary juris doctorate from the Lorenzo Patino School of Law.
